2016 is upon us. Cue the cheers of glee, fireworks and most of all the new year resolutions that are meant to change you for the better. I have to confess that I am the ‘new year new me’ kind of girl, and yes more often than not the only thing that ends up changing is the date. On some few occasions though it has worked out for me, case in point 2015. I actually managed to adapt to a decent enough beauty regime, I eat healthier (that’s still a work in progress though) and I have a clear perspective of the relationships that matter in my life.

Although, in most part there never is much change in the new year when it comes to our personal development the one change that lovers of colour can always depend on is a new colour of the year announced by Pantone, the world-renowned authority on color. And boy is it exciting!!! Okay maybe exciting is pushing it…more like interesting.

Last years colour was MARSALA, a rich and full-bodied red-brown that I fell in love with. Have a look at my last post ‘The Colour Trend : Looking Back at 2015’ to see why I love it and how I prefer to work with it. This year Pantone really surprised me. Not only was this the first time, at least as per my knowledge, that they selected 2 colours. They also made a drastic change from the mature MARSALA to very demure and subtle pink and blue tones.

So without further a do…..I present to you Pantones’s 2016 colourS of the year…

Before I give you my opinion here’s why Pantone chose them:

As consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses, welcoming colors that psychologically fulfill our yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent. Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.

Based on their reasoning, I think these two colours are the best representation of our times but I am faced with the unfortunate conundrum of my brain saying yes but my heart saying NO…PLEASE NO!!

My brain’s logic : “Using design, and in turn colour, is a reflection of the needs/desires/wants of the world and if we desire calmness then that is definitely the mood Pantone’s choice creates.”

My heart on the other is of the opinion that: “What is going on? Seriously…what happened here? Why? Why? Why? How did we go from exciting and invigorating to the perfect colour scheme for the room of a baby  whose parents wanted its sex to be a surprise.”

The conclusion I have finally come to is perfectly explained by Hamlet “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so” So be still my dramatic heart and chill out my over logical brain and lets see the potential that ROSE QUARTZ and SERENITY has.

I’ve therefore kept an open mind and created mood boards for various rooms and also fashion boards (for both women and men) that shows how I would incorporate these colour.

Have a look and don’t hesitate to tell me what you think:

And there you have it, folks. From interiors to fashion each of these colours are versatile on their own but work brilliantly when paired together to create a surprisingly chic look that doesn’t scream infant.
