OMBRE TO DYE FOR (INSPIRATION): THE TALE OF OMBRE CARPETS

So there I was in Naivas supermarket, making a quick dash to the cashew nuts section, when what do I happen to see past the corner of my eye……a pretty decent ombre carpet (PS: Ombré describes the gradual blending of one color to another).

I hear angels sing and a harp play in the background as I walk towards this unexpected piece of art.

For those who aren’t from these neck of the woods, i.e. Kenya, you must be wondering why I’m being so dramatic about it. Without being too blunt all I’ll say is that Naivas isn’t known for its brilliant design pieces. Okay, moving on swiftly…

I just couldn’t believe it! I’d been searching for an ombre carpet for a client who had a really tight budget and there it was staring right at me. Seeing that it was below my predicted cost (its retailing at 7,800/- Ksh) I was sure my client would be hearing those angels singing too.

PART 2: INTERIORS

Other than the excitement of reading my new post how are you doing this blessed day? Yesterday in Part 1 of the Time traveling design: From the 50’s to the 16, I looked at the how the Pantone colours of the year are reminiscent of the 1950’s ice cream/bubblegum colours.

That got me thinking of what other design elements are popular now that were at their peak in the 50s. Here is a quick post that looks at 4 major elements that can help us travel back in time.

All on board!!!

PART 1: COLOURS

Welcome to the first ‘episode’ in a series that will look at how design has been reinvented in our modern times.

Now a couple of weeks ago I posted my first blog of the year and talked, more like ranted, about the Pantone colours of the year. Have a look HERE at the mental and emotional anguish I had with a accepting ROSE QUARTZ and SERENITY.

Despite my opinion, I have been having this inkling feeling about these colours…dare I say some sort of Déjà vu. Then yesterday as I was getting ready to leave the house it just hit me like a ton of bricks….GREASE THE MOVIE (My number one reference to 1950’s America).

Take a look at these visual references of the movie. Notice how these 2 colours are a dominant feature.

ARE YOU RED-Y FOR A RED SOFA?

YES YOU ARE!!!

I’m sure you’re wondering where this is coming from. Well, if you follow me on Instagram (@theinteriordecorator) you’ll know that there was a point during the week when I got all obsessed with RED.

It all begun when I was took my friend Pam sofa shopping. After a long search she finally fell in love with one, but her only problem was that it was red. Don’t get me wrong, she loved the fact that it was red, she just couldn’t see how she could have a red sofa.

“Seriously Jordan how am I meant to style my home around a red sofa? It would be so conspicuous! bla bla bla”

From the feedback I got from the sales girl Pam’s sediments were actually very common. That’s why they hadn’t been able to sell the sofa so far.

So I thought why not show any of you naysayers how BEAUTIFUL, COZY, FUN  yet SOPHISTICATED a red sofa can make a home look. And yes, it is very possible to do this regardless of your home’s theme. Don”t believe me? Well, have a look at these 5 different themes I have created all using a red sofa. Read More

LOOKING FORWARD: PANTONE 2016 COLOURS OF THE YEAR

2016 is upon us. Cue the cheers of glee, fireworks and most of all the new year resolutions that are meant to change you for the better. I have to confess that I am the ‘new year new me’ kind of girl, and yes more often than not the only thing that ends up changing is the date. On some few occasions though it has worked out for me, case in point 2015. I actually managed to adapt to a decent enough beauty regime, I eat healthier (that’s still a work in progress though) and I have a clear perspective of the relationships that matter in my life.

Although, in most part there never is much change in the new year when it comes to our personal development the one change that lovers of colour can always depend on is a new colour of the year announced by Pantone, the world-renowned authority on color. And boy is it exciting!!! Okay maybe exciting is pushing it…more like interesting. Read More
