VILLA ROSA KEMPINSKI: HEAD OVER HEELS

Hey my dears. How’ve you been since we last talked (or I should I say since I wrote and you read)? Well, I had a pretty good week, I was mostly busy because I had a bit of traveling to do for work, but my highlight was definitely the weekend when I got to celebrate mother dearest’s birthday. It honestly amazes me how much I love that woman, she’s not only my mother but my best friend and any reason to celebrate her is definitely worth it.As blessings go I hit the jackpot when it comes to my mum.

I’ve gone off on a tangent again. Jordan…focus!

So speaking of the weekend, last weekend I got to attend the DIVAlicious event at the Villa Rosa Kempinski. This got me thinking about how this classic hotel is surprisingly on trend. If you follow me on Instagram you would know that the perfect example of this is with their use of one of Pantone’s 2016 colours of the year, Rose quartz, on their exterior.

Happy belated Mother’s day. A couple of people have mentioned to me that they’ve missed reading my AFRICAN DESIGN DIARY posts (like this one and this one) so in the spirit of Mothers day I shall dedicate this #ADD post to my mother land, Kenya, and highlight the textile and pottery company, KENYA WEAVERBIRD LTD.

Their CEO and Creative director, Jacqueline Resley, came to Kenya from London by actually hitchhiking via Spain, Egypt, Morocco and points in between. My hero right there!

WINDOW TREATMENT: ROD PLACEMENT & CURTAIN LENGTH

Let me set a scene for you. You’re going out somewhere special today (a wedding/date/get together…something or the other) and you have to dress to the nines. It then hits you that there is this perfect outfit you haven’t worn in a while and you’re extremely excited. So an hour to the event you’re getting ready and the unfortunate takes place…its too tight. The midnight snacking has caught up with you and you’ve gained a few kilos. You are hit with the reality that as wonderful as an outfit may be if it is ill fitting you will look ridiculous.

In this same case a pretty room with poorly hung curtains is like a beautiful, pulled-together lady wearing an ill fitting outfit. It cheapens everything else, stands out in a jarring way and just makes everyone feel uncomfortable.

Let’s combat this problem head on and really get into what some of you are doing wrong:

SPOKEN4ART: WHEN ART MEETS POETRY

Have I ever told you guys how my journey into interior design and decor begun? Well, its actually a very random story to say the least.

I’d always wanted to be a civil engineer so all the subjects I took in school were geared in that direction. Art, on the other hand, was mostly a hobby as I usually sketched portraits and dress designs when I was bored. So fast forward to when I was in SAINT MARY’S doing I.B. and as expected I was taking the science and math classes that would take me to that ‘glorious job’ as a civil engineer. On one of those days when I didn’t have a class my friend Yvonne asked me to escort her to her design class. So I did. Long story short, the teacher thought I wanted to join the class and I obliged her fantasies and stayed. At the end of the class I knew without a doubt that design was my destiny. I went home, told my mum and 2 weeks later I changed my subjects to those that would lead me to the designer I am today.

I’ve always been forever grateful to Yvonne for being some form of catalyst to that change. Unfortunately as life would have it we lost touch for many years, but a couple of  weeks ago I was pleasantly surprised to find out that she was still creating beautiful artwork through her company SPOKEN ART. The unique thing about it is her pieces are inspired by poems her business partner writes.

MAMA SHELTER HOTEL: PARIS

Have you missed me? Worry no more, today I come bearing eclectic gifts for you..

Now a couple of years ago I created a very bold colour scheme for a client’s room and although she was initially skeptical (as most people would be about having a black wall) I’m glad she trusted me because she fell madly in love with it. Here’s a snippet of the room:
