ASKTID SESSION 6 RECAP: 7 WAYS TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR INTERIOR DESIGNER/DECORATOR

A couple of weeks ago I was having breakfast with some amazing women discussing our businesses/career paths and somewhere in that discussion we started talking about how when one’s business starts growing the little things they used to enjoy doing within the company slowly start taking a back seat. Reason always being that one doesn’t have enough time anymore. As we were all nodding trying to think of aspects of our business/careers that fit within this scope one of the women, my cousin and one of my biggest supporters, looks me straight in the eyes and says;

“Jordan, you’re culprit number one because you used to love doing your askTID sessions yet when’s the last time you’ve done one?”

“Uh, well…..”

“You see, guilty as charged.”

Then she takes a bite of her eggs and continues enjoying her meal as if she hadn’t just slapped some sense into me.

She was right though, I hadn’t done a session for 5 whole months and I should be ashamed of myself. For those of you who dont know what askTID is, it simply means ASK THE INTERIOR DECORATOR. It is 24 hours of me availing myself online, offering FREE INTERIOR DESIGN AND DECOR ADVICE. Whether one is having a hard time choosing a paint colour, or they don’t know where to find furniture or fabrics, or they just need help figuring out how to arrange their space, I am there to help them out. Check out the last sessions HERE.

To understand why having not conducted these sessions made me ASHAMED, you’d need to first understand why I do what I do (bare with me now). One of the reasons why I chose my career path as an interior stylist is because I place so much value on having a place to call home. I strongly believe that no matter how big or small, everyone needs at least four walls that they can call their own. Four walls that are a reflection of who they are! It’s therefore my life’s mission to help everyone achieve this either through my styling services or this blog. I will be honest, that sometimes I don’t feel like this blog is sufficient in helping people get absolute advice as it isn’t really as personalised to all of your individual needs and thus my askTID sessions. Now do you understand why not having done them in so long makes me feel so ashamed? It’s because I feel like I’m not being true to my mission of helping all of y’all turn your houses into homes.

So with that said and done, I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me (I sound like an unfaithful spouse who’s seen the error of their ways) and to prove I’m genuinely sorry I come bearing a gift like no other, the gift of knowledge. Knowledge of how to get the most out of any interior designer/decorator/stylist you may work with. I usually tell all my clients that it’s extremely important for the two of us to understand that we will be venturing into a very intimate relationship where the client has to open up their life-and dreams-to interpretation. Remember that when you hire a designer, especially for your home, you are entrusting them with your haven.

I have therefore prepared a cheat-sheet of the 7 best ways to get the most out of your designer, and if you follow ever single one I promise you will not only enjoy the journey but also guarantee a spectacular destination, that of your dream interiors.

#ASKTID SESSION 5 RECAP: REVAMPING A KITCHEN YOU CAN’T RENOVATE

As you may know Session 5 of #AskTID has recently concluded but what you may not know is that this one was hands down the most successful of them all. I know I say that every time but it is testament to how more and more of you value my opinion and I want you know that I don’t take it for granted even one bit.

Looking back at all the past sessions I came to the realization that during each one no less than 5 people have to ask me about how they can easily revamp their kitchens. Therefore for those of you who are renting or can’t afford to renovate their kitchen here are 9 ways to add life into the heart of the home.

#ASKTID SESSION 4 RECAP: THE ART OF SCATTER CUSHIONS

Session 4 of #AskTID was the best one ever and it really humbles me how many of you trust me with all your queries. As has been the case with all the other sessions there seems to be some questions most of you tend to ask more than others and this time a large number of you (close to 40%) had some question or the other to do with scatter cushions. So for those of you who are sitting in the abyss of cushion confusion and don’t know where to turn to let this post be your saving grace. Be prepared for a lengthy post but I want to touch on everything scatter cushion related, from the type of filling, to the art of cushion arrangement, to the age old question on whether or not to chop. Don’t know what chopping and cushions have to do with each other then you really need this post.

Enjoy!

#ASKTID SESSION 3: PULLING THE RUG OUT FROM UNDER YOU

Before I get into anything else I have to say a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone (all 34 of you) who trusted me enough to send in your design and decor queries during session 3 of #askTID. As hectic as it was answered everyone’s questions and ensuring that I gave relevant drawing and visual aids it was hands down the highlight of the last couple of months. If I ever doubted whether I was destined for this field then the thrill I get out of #askTID sessions is sure proof of it. So thank you again.

Okay, so now let’s get down to business. As you can tell from the title this post is going to be about rugs. When I’m helping you guys out during #askTID sessions I usually require you to send me images of the space that way I can better understand what I’m working with. What I’ve noticed is that most of you are committing a SERIOUS crime. One that is breaking my heart not only because of the injustice you are doing to your space but mostly because you are completely oblivious of it. What is it you ask?  Well, its the selection of the wrong rug size and I’m here to pull it right out from under you by showing you what you’re doing wrong and what you should have instead.

#ASKTID SESSION 2: THE LIGHTING EDITION

Hey, I wanted to start this post on a LIGHT note but I thought it would be best to go LIGHT on the jokes.  Okay…Okay…enough of the lighting puns. If you couldn’t tell from the title I recently, on Monday to be exact, held the second session of #AskTID. As you would know from session one (see here if you missed it) I hold a monthly 24 hour social media campaign where I give free consultations to anyone and everyone who throws an interior design and decor question. This time it was very interesting to receive a load of questions on lighting. From fixture type, to placement, to size, the list goes on and on. I therefore saw it best to highlight THREE questions I received that I hope will be eye opening to most of you.

Enjoy!
