Collection: ‘In the Name of Africanness’

  • These works are an inquiry into the emotional and psychological terrain of diasporic identity. The series draws on the symbolism of masks to explore the layers of self that are concealed, protected, or selectively revealed in response to displacement, cultural expectation, and social perception.

Composed as deeply personal reflections, the masks become visual articulations of the artist’s experience navigating life in a foreign context—where identity is often read before it is understood. Each form carries the weight of both pride and vulnerability, shaped by the desire to honour cultural roots while negotiating the realities of assimilation. The works do not seek resolution, but rather hold space for tension—for the internal negotiations between visibility and protection, heritage and adaptation.

Kujificha resists a singular narrative of identity, instead allowing for multiplicity and contradiction. The act of hiding is not treated as erasure, but as a strategy of survival and self-definition—a quiet, deliberate holding of self in the face of being constantly seen.

  • The ‘In the Name of Africanness’ collection delves into the artist's ongoing reflection on her African identity, shaped by her roots in Kenya and her current experience in Germany. Through these works, the artist interrogates the complexities of what it means to be "African enough," exploring the nuances of cultural belonging and the multifaceted nature of Africanness. With each piece, she questions: What defines her connection to Kenya? What elements shape her understanding of being African? The collection invites viewers to contemplate the intricate layers of identity and the fluid boundaries that frame what it means to truly belong.
