Collection: Discussions

  • Series 3 (2025):

Through this series, Jordan Rita Seruya Awori (JRSA) explores the power dynamics, historical grudges, and ongoing struggle for self-determination within the complex relationship between former colonial powers and their former colonies. Inspired by French President Macron’s controversial statements about the sovereignty of Sahel nations, Series 3 examines the tension between France and its former colonies. Macron claimed that Sahel nations owe their sovereignty to France’s intervention against jihadists, a comment rejected by countries like Senegal and Chad. These nations criticized Macron for being dismissive of African sovereignty and for overlooking the historical context of France’s diminishing influence in the region.

    Series 2 (2022):

This work engages with the conversations sparked on Twitter following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8th. JRSA explores the polarized reactions between citizens of former British colonies, especially in Africa, who express anger over the monarchy’s failure to acknowledge its colonial atrocities. In contrast, supporters of the monarchy argue that the timing is inappropriate for such discussions and suggest Queen Elizabeth be seen more as a liberator than a perpetrator. By pairing these conversations with visuals and historical timelines, JRSA allows the facts to speak for themselves, providing a powerful commentary on the ongoing reckoning with colonial legacies.

    Series 1 (2022):

This body of work aims to bring attention to what JRSA sees as glaringly one-sided conversations surrounding the restitution of stolen cultural artifacts from former colonial powers to their colonies. Focusing particularly on the ongoing discussions in Germany, JRSA considers these debates both absurd and disrespectful, as they blatantly disregard the harsh realities of colonialism. The artist highlights the dismissal of restitution demands, shedding light on the continued harm caused by colonial exploitation.

  • The Discussions collection comprises works in which JRSA seeks to illuminate and interrogate the various discussions surrounding the complex dynamics of numerous socio-political topics. Through these pieces, the artist reflects on how these conversations unfold, exploring the underlying tensions and complexities that shape public discourse. Serving as a critical examination of how socio-political issues are framed, debated, and understood within different contexts, encouraging deeper reflection on the power of dialogue in shaping society.
