Kufa na Kupona—a Swahili phrase that translates to “death and healing”, but is more commonly understood to mean “by all means necessary”—was a 4-hour participatory performance by JRSA that transformed personal sorrow into a collective act of care and restoration.
Rooted in the emotional aftermath of loss, the performance invited participants into a shared space of quiet labour and connection. Together, pieces of delicate paper were sewn into a growing "paper quilt," with each stitch marking a small but intentional gesture of mending—of self, of memory, of collective grief. The act was both intimate and expansive, offering a tactile way to hold the weight of absence while also building something new from it.
Kufa na Kupona unfolded slowly and deliberately, honouring the tenderness required in times of mourning. It became a meditation on what it means to repair—not to restore what was, but to reassemble ourselves in the presence of others, stitch by stitch, by all means necessary.
