Walking on Sunshine

Short, 2 min 46 secs, 2023

  • This video work juxtaposes two contrasting visual worlds: found footage of a racially motivated assault that occurred on Christmas Day 2022 in the Orange Free State, South Africa, and serene imagery of a summer sky glimpsed through tree branches. By layering distressing documentation with tranquil scenes and cheerful music, the piece creates a striking dissonance—inviting viewers to confront the emotional distance that often exists between global injustices and everyday life.

Rather than offering resolution, the work lingers in discomfort. It challenges the viewer to reflect on the ways violence is consumed, ignored, or softened in public consciousness. Through this tension, artist Jordan Rita Seruya Awori (JRSA) asks: What does it mean to bear witness? What responsibility do we carry in the face of brutality that does not directly touch us? The piece becomes a quiet but urgent call—to notice, to care, and to resist the pull of indifference.
